The Contractor’s Guide to Geogrids & Stabilization Fabrics

A black stabilization fabric laid out on a construction site.

Whether you’re laying a road base, building a retaining wall, or prepping a slope, the success of your project starts with what’s under your feet. Weak subgrade? You’re risking settlement, cracking, and costly failures down the line.

That’s where geogrids and stabilization fabrics add strength and structural stability.

At Stevenson Supply & Tractor Co., we’ve spent four generations supplying Northern California contractors with top-tier geosynthetic solutions. This guide walks you through the basics: what these products are, when to use them, and how to install them right the first time.

What Are Geogrids and Stabilization Fabrics?

Geogrids are high-strength polymer grids (typically made from polypropylene or polyester) used to reinforce soil and spread loads. Their open mesh structure lets aggregate interlock with the grid, increasing bearing capacity and reducing rutting.

Stabilization fabrics (also known as geotextiles) come in woven and nonwoven forms:

  • Woven geotextiles: High tensile strength, ideal for stabilization and separation.
  • Nonwoven geotextiles: Better for filtration and drainage, great for erosion control or areas with water flow.

Benefits of Using Geosynthetics

  • Prevent subgrade contamination
  • Improve load distribution
  • Reduce over-excavation costs
  • Enhance durability of roads, pads, and embankments

Together, these products prevent rutting, washouts, and subgrade contamination, making them essential for contractors who want to build right the first time.

Winfab vs. Mirafi: Choosing the Right Brand

At Stevenson Supply, we stock two trusted names: Winfab and Mirafi. Here’s a side-by-side look to help you pick the right fit.

Winfab: Affordable, Durable, Versatile

  • Winfab 800N (Nonwoven): Perfect for drainage, behind retaining walls, or under riprap.
  • Winfab 200W / 400W (Woven): Go-to choice for general soil stabilization on pads and driveways.

Mirafi: Engineered Performance

  • Mirafi HP270: Designed for high-load roads and critical applications.
  • Mirafi 500X: Ideal for separating aggregate from weak subgrade in parking lots or soft soil areas.

🔧 Our Tip

Use Winfab for general jobs and drainage zones. Use Mirafi when the spec calls for it—or when you need high-performance reinforcement.

🛠️ Installation Best Practices: Do It Right the First Time

Proper installation is critical. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting the most out of your geogrids and fabrics:

1. Prep Your Subgrade

2. Lay the Fabric

  • Roll out in the direction of construction.
  • Overlap seams by 12–18 inches or follow manufacturer guidance.
  • Secure with staples or trench edges to prevent movement.

3. Install Geogrids

  • Align the grid so its strongest direction is perpendicular to traffic flow.
  • Overlap grids by 1–2 feet.
  • Lightly tension and stake the material before adding aggregate.
  • Add 6–12 inches of crushed rock (per spec) and compact in lifts.

⚠️ Pro Tip

Avoid driving equipment directly on exposed fabric or grid. Use a working platform of base material to protect the product.

Where to Use These Products: Real Jobsite Applications

These materials show up in just about every heavy-duty jobsite:

  • Driveway Base: Reinforce soft soils and prevent long-term rutting.
  • Road Construction: Mirafi HP270 improves load-bearing over weak subgrades.
  • Retaining Walls: Use geogrids to reinforce backfill and reduce wall pressure.
  • Slope Stabilization: Nonwoven Winfab holds slopes and prevents washouts in place while allowing water to drain.
  • Equipment Pads: Build stable work platforms that don’t shift or sink over time.
